Michael Neilson, DO
Dr. Mike Neilson specializes in sports medicine, treating acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries for patients of all ages. His practice includes diagnostic ultrasound, ultrasound-guided injections, and the Tenex procedure, a minimally invasive option for patients with chronic tendon pain that has not responded to conservative treatments.
The Tenex procedure is particularly effective for conditions like tennis elbow, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, calcific tendonitis, and small partial tendon tears. Using only local anesthesia, Dr. Neilson employs Tenex to perform an ultrasound-guided percutaneous needle tenotomy to remove scar tissue from the affected tendon, requiring only a tiny incision with no sutures. This innovative approach offers a safe alternative to open surgery, with most patients returning to activity within 6-8 weeks and continuing to recover up to six months.
Dr. Neilson’s background as a three-sport high school athlete, former collegiate football player, and fellowship-trained sports medicine physician gives him a lifelong familiarity with sports injuries and the importance of a safe, efficient recovery. During his fellowship, he served as a team physician for athletes at Utah Valley University and Brigham Young University, providing medical coverage for sports like football, basketball, and soccer, among others. He has also supported high school football, the Utah high school state wrestling tournament, the St. George Ironman, and ski clinics in Park City, Utah.
Outside of work, Dr. Neilson enjoys exploring Idaho with his wife and four children. His hobbies include weightlifting, playing sports of all kinds, and enjoying board games and video games with friends and family.
