Common Causes of Knee Pain
There are many causes of knee pain. After all, the stress the knee encounters each day can be tremendous. Each step we take can generate pressures up to 2-to-3 times your body weight. If you experience pain that does not improve with rest and ice, or if your pain is associated with swelling, receiving an evaluation from a physician is worthwhile.
Whether your pain is new or old, we can help. Some of the most common causes of knee pain treated at Direct Orthopedic Care include:
Knee Arthritis
The most common type of knee arthritis is osteoarthritis. This occurs when the cartilage in the knee wears away over time.
Cartilage Injuries
Cartilage injuries in the knee can be caused by joint dislocation, a meniscus tear, impact, infection, or inflammation.
Meniscus Tears
A meniscus tear can happen suddenly, oftentimes during physical activity or sports that involve twisting or rotating the knee with extreme force.
Chondromalacia Patella
Chondromalacia patella occurs when the tissue under the kneecap begins to break down and soften.
Knee Fractures
Knee fractures occur when one or more of the bones in the knee joint break or crack. A fracture can range from minor to severe.
Ligament Injuries
An injury to any of the knee ligaments is usually accompanied by sudden and severe pain, swelling, an audible pop or snapping sound at the time of injury, and difficulty applying weight to the joint.
Common Causes of Hip Pain
Hip pain affects patients young and old, regardless of their level of physical activity. If your hip pain does not improve with rest and anti-inflammatory medication, it may be time to seek medical advice.
Whether your pain is new or, old we can help. Some of the most common causes of hip pain treated at Direct Orthopedic Care include:
Hip Arthritis
Arthritis is the term used to describe inflammation of the joints. Osteoarthritis is the most common form found in the hip.
Hip Labral Tear
The hip labrum acts as a support system for the joint by providing stability and allowing for a substantive range of motion. In many cases, a tear to the labrum can be the result of a traumatic incident, such as a motor vehicle accident or a severe fall.
Tendonitis
Tendonitis in the hip occurs when the tendons become irritated or inflamed. In most cases, hip tendonitis is the result of tendons undergoing continual stress from overuse.
Femoroacetabular Impingement
Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) occurs when an extra bone grows alongside one or both of the bones that structure the hip joint.
Bursitis
Bursitis, or inflammation of the bursa, can irritate and inflame the major bursae in the hip.
Sciatica
Sciatica is a prevalent cause of pain that involves the sciatic nerve, a substantive nerve that runs from the lower back down to the backside of each leg. Sciatica commonly develops when the sciatic nerve is compressed.
Hip Fractures
Hip fractures occur when the femur or the top quarter of the thighbone suffers a break. Fractures in the hip can occur for a variety of reasons—a serious fall being the most common.
