SLAP Tear

SLAP is an acronym for “superior labral tear from anterior to posterior”. A SLAP tear, also known as a SLAP lesion, occurs when the labrum of the shoulder (i.e., the cartilage rim that encircles the shoulder joint socket) becomes injured.

Common causes of labrum injuries typically fall into two categories: (i) acute trauma or (ii) repetitive shoulder movement. Injuries associated with acute trauma include falling on an outstretched arm, motor vehicle accidents, and shoulder dislocation, while injuries related to repetitive shoulder movement may occur in activities or sports that require frequent overhead motion, such as throwing and weightlifting.

The most common symptoms associated with SLAP tears include deep shoulder pain that worsens with movement, decreased shoulder strength, decreased shoulder range of motion, and popping or locking sensations in the shoulder.
